Monday 6/29/2026 Arrived in Kigali safely.

Start with a photo in our back yard by the Blackwater River.

It’s been a long 24 hours. Caught the Concord Trailways bus at 1:00 on Sunday and just arrived at our hotel room in the capital of Rwanda at 10:30pm Monday evening. There is a 6 hour time difference but still a long travel. The best part was Leslie was able to pull off a last minute upgrade for a very reasonable price and we flew 1st class from Amsterdam to Kigali.

A mocktail compliments of KLM Airways. They are the best at service!

All in all the flights were good and on time. Being able to lie flat and sleep on the 2nd half of our journey was extremely helpful. We were met by a guide at the Kigali airport who escorted us through customs and walked us out to our driver, Gilles, who will be with us this whole first week.

So much to share already but needed to get something to you in your inbox! Our adventure begins Tuesday with a local tour around the city and a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. An important and heartbreaking piece of Rwanda history.

Our welcome plate at the hotel

After our tour of the city Gilles will drive us to the Gorilla Mountain Lodge, 3 hours from here, where we begin our treks on Wednesday.

See you soon with some photos!

Leslie and Vickie.

It sounds like Leslie should become a travel agent! Finding a first class upgrade is awesome! Can’t wait to see the adventures as they begin.

Have a drink poolside at the ‘Hotel Rwanda’ historic refuge during genocide.

Are you having a private tour? Those green drinks looked very scary! Looking forward to sharing your adventures. Betty P

    1. We have a private driver for the week. After our treks we can go into town to see local crafts.

The drinks were lemon, ginger and spirulina.
